At the end of June 2025, Sweden’s largest floating solar power plant was installed on a leachate pond at Jönköping Environmental Management. For a long time, they have been working to make their operations more climate-smart, with a focus on using renewable energy. With the help of floating solar technology, this has now become a reality.
The system consists of 48 floating modules and 144 double-sided solar panels with a total capacity of 116.1 kWp. The panels utilize both direct sunlight and reflected light from the water surface, which contributes to higher efficiency.
The system is designed to power the operations at the pond with renewable energy without affecting logistics or functionality within waste management. The floating modules are constructed with HDPE pontoons and aluminum frames, adapted for the tough conditions of landfill water and high snow loads during winter. The project enables local electricity production with reduced climate impact and demonstrates how renewable energy can be integrated into demanding industrial environments without disrupting existing operations.

Hyllstofta Waste Facility
To make waste management more sustainable, Nårab has installed a floating solar power system at the Hyllstofta waste management facility. With 126 bifacial panels and an installed capacity of 100 kWp, Norra Åsbo now produces clean electricity directly for its daily operations. The solution saves land area, reduces climate impact, and increases energy self-sufficiency.

To reduce climate impact and increase the share of renewable energy, Norra Åsbo Waste Management (Nårab) installed a floating solar power system on one of the leachate ponds at the Hyllstofta waste management facility in early 2025. The initiative is part of the company’s efforts to make waste management more sustainable and energy-efficient.
The installation of the floating solar system was made possible thanks to Sunsurf Solar’s technology. The facility consists of 42 modules and 126 bifacial solar panels with a total capacity of 100 kWp, covering an area of approximately 500 square meters. The installed panels are bifacial, meaning they absorb direct sunlight from above as well as indirect light reflected from the water surface, resulting in higher overall efficiency compared to conventional ground- or roof-mounted solar installations.
Placing solar panels on a leachate pond is a strategic solution for the Hyllstofta landfill site. It utilizes otherwise unused space for electricity production without affecting Nårab’s land resources or the logistics of waste management operations.
An important advantage of Sunsurf Solar’s technology is the patented mooring system, which allows secure installation without impacting the pond’s protective liner. The system can also handle large variations in water levels, making it suitable for environments like leachate ponds. The solar power generated is used directly in daily operations, reducing the need for purchased electricity and lowering operating costs while increasing energy self-sufficiency.
The installation is part of Nårab’s long-term environmental and quality strategy, which focuses on circular thinking, sustainable energy sources, and efficient resource use. Through this initiative, Nårab demonstrates how solar energy and waste management facilities can work hand in hand.

Tångagård Falkenberg
In 2024, a floating photovoltaic system was installed at Tångagård in Falkenberg. Positioned next to the pump house, the installation makes it possible to irrigate using green electricity.

In early 2024, a floating solar power system was installed at Tångagård in Falkenberg, utilizing Sunsurf Solar’s technology. The system consists of 42 floating modules and 126 bifacial solar panels, with a total capacity of 100 kWp, covering nearly 500 square meters.
The bifacial panels capture sunlight from both the front and back sides, taking advantage of the reflections from the pond’s water surface. Thanks to this efficient design, the system generates more energy than traditional solar installations, increasing overall energy efficiency. The system is strategically located next to Tångagård’s pump house, allowing the farm’s pumps to be powered directly by solar energy. It is anchored using Sunsurf Solar’s patented mooring system, which can handle large variations in water levels. This flexible solution is particularly well-suited for irrigation ponds and perfectly matches Tångagård’s operational needs.
By implementing this system, Tångagård has not only reduced its energy costs but also taken another important step toward more sustainable food production. The solar installation enhances the farm’s energy self-sufficiency and enables the generation of green electricity without affecting crop areas or compromising agricultural productivity.
“It’s great to produce renewable energy on a surface that can’t be used for anything else. I’m quite tired of seeing solar parks on farmland — I think that’s just nonsense. But using an area that can’t generate anything else, and that also reduces evaporation, is brilliant.”
– IVAR NILSSON, Pond Owner

Project Peatland
Sunsurf Solar continually strives to stay at the forefront of development and innovation. As part of our technological advancements to enable floating solar systems and our ambition to utilize otherwise hard-to-use land areas, we have developed a technology that makes it possible to install solar panels on other unused surfaces such as peatlands, wetlands, and landfills. The first tests were carried out on peatland with challenging ground conditions, uneven terrain, and limited accessibility. The purpose of the test was to evaluate both the technology and the installation process. The results were very positive — the technology proved to be both reliable and efficient.
One of the major advantages of this technology is that it enables solar installations in areas with low pH levels, where other methods, such as piling, are not feasible. This allows for minimal environmental impact, which is especially important in peatlands. Peatlands act as significant carbon sinks, storing large amounts of CO₂, making them crucial for the climate. However, they cover extensive areas and are difficult to use for other types of infrastructure. Developing energy solutions that can be applied without damaging these ecosystems is therefore of great importance.
With our technology, solar panels can be installed on peatlands with minimal environmental disturbance. This means we can contribute to the production of green energy while protecting vital ecosystems. For Sunsurf Solar, this represents a major step forward in our mission to develop sustainable solutions that benefit both the environment and the world’s future energy needs.
“We had high expectations that the technology would perform well under these conditions, but it was still fantastic to see the results confirm our assumptions. We now look forward to using this solution in larger projects where the land would otherwise remain unused.”

Säve Nursery
Säve Nursery, located north of Gothenburg, has long been committed to sustainable practices aimed at minimizing its climate impact. The investment in floating solar technology became a natural part of its long-term strategy to combine production with environmental responsibility — while making smart use of existing resources.
The installation has proven to be stable under harsh weather conditions, including snow and ice. During warm summer days, the reflection from the water surface has generated higher output, while also reducing evaporation. In addition, the cooling effect of the water helps keep the panel temperature lower and more consistent — unlike rooftop solar systems, which can experience reduced performance as panel temperatures rise.
The energy produced at Säve Nursery is sufficient to power both the pump stations and other parts of the operation, reducing the nursery’s reliance on traditional energy sources. With Sunsurf Solar’s patented mooring system, the installation can withstand significant variations in water levels, making it a flexible and reliable solution perfectly suited for the nursery’s irrigation pond.
