The Driving Force Behind Sunsurf Solar
About Us
Sunsurf Solar was founded in 2020 by Marc Montgomery, Martin Örgård, and Björn Larsson. The company was born out of a shared commitment to the increasingly pressing climate situation and the need to accelerate the development of sustainable solutions in the market.
With backgrounds in civil engineering and environmental science and experience in technology development in the offshore sector, floating solar cells became a natural and exciting challenge. After several years of technology development, testing and validation of the technology, Sunsurf Solar has developed solutions that enable the installation of competitive floating and pile-free solar solutions in a Nordic climate.

Solar Energy Awards
With Sweden's first floating solar cell facility, Sunsurf Solar demonstrates that the limits of solar energy in Sweden are not confined to ground and roof installations. Their work is an ideal example of initiative and an inspiring reminder that technological development and sustainability can go hand in hand.
Swedish Solar Energy Association
The start of the journey. On September 18, 2020, Sunsurf Solar AB was founded in Gothenburg with the vision of developing floating solar cell systems adapted to the Nordic climate.
From the outset, the focus was on sustainable design, with components made from recycled aluminum and HDPE, and collaboration with local suppliers. The prototypes were developed that same year: PowerModule™ for water surfaces and PeatModule™ for peatlands—two innovations that laid the foundation for our continued development.
A key breakthrough year.
-
Sunsurf Solar sells and installs its first pilot project—a floating solar cell facility on the irrigation pond at Sötåsen Agricultural College in Västra Götaland.
An important step confirming that the technology works in practice under Nordic conditions.
-
-
Sunsurf Solar is accepted into the Innovatum Startup Incubator and receives strategic support to further develop the technology behind our floating solar energy solutions.
-
Early pilot projects are generating great interest from municipalities, industries, waste companies and farmers, who see the potential in the solutions for both energy and surface efficiency.
-
In 2023, interest in the technology is growing rapidly.
-
Sunsurf Solar is accepted into the Founders Loft Incubator in Gothenburg and receives support from both Founders Loft and Innovatum to accelerate technology development.
-
The team also participates in SVT's Draknästet, where the vision of sustainable energy on water surfaces reaches a national audience.
-
A year of expansion and technological breakthroughs.
Sunsurf Solar completes Sweden’s first peat-adapted solar installation in Västra Götaland — a unique project utilizing our proprietary PeatModule™ technology.
We also construct Halland’s first floating solar power plant at Tångagård in Falkenberg, and establish Sunsurf Solar Energy AB — our sister company offering PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) solutions for flexible and sustainable energy supply.
In addition, Sunsurf Solar is named Startup of the Year 2024 at the Trollhättan Business Awards.
A historic year for Sunsurf Solar . On the company's fifth anniversary, we are awarded the Stora Ingenjörspriset in the Innovation category, in recognition of our pioneering work with liquid solar energy.
Several major steps are being taken during the year:
-
Commissioning of Skåne's first floating solar cell plant, an important step for the region's green transition.
-
Commissioning of Sweden's largest floating solar park, a milestone for Swedish solar energy.
-
Sunsurf Solar becomes a finalist in E-Prize 2025, a testament to our innovative power and technical expertise.
-
Coming:
Sunsurf Solar continues to drive development forward and will install Öland's first floating solar cell plant in 2026 - a project that marks the next step in our journey towards a sustainable energy future.
