Sunsurf Solar

From start-up in 2020 to Sweden's largest floating solar park in 2025

The team behind Sunsurf Solar

Sunsurf Solar was founded in Gothenburg in 2020 by Marc Montgomery, Martin Örgård and Björn Larsson — driven by a shared commitment to the climate and the need to move sustainable energy forward, faster. Five years on, we delivered Sweden's largest floating solar park: 116.1 kWp at Miljöhantering i Jönköping (2025). Last updated: 24 April 2026.

Sunsurf Solar

The founders bring backgrounds in engineering and environmental science, and years of technology development from the offshore industry — which is what made floating solar a natural and compelling problem to take on. After several years of development, testing and validation, Sunsurf Solar has the systems to install competitive floating and pile-free solar in a Nordic climate.

Our journey

From the founding in Gothenburg in 2020 to Sweden's largest floating solar park in 2025 — here's how the Sunsurf Solar story has unfolded, year by year.

    2020 — The start

    01

Sunsurf Solar AB was founded in Gothenburg on 18 September 2020, with the goal of developing floating solar systems built for the Nordic climate. From the outset the focus was on sustainable design — recycled aluminium, coated steel and HDPE, and partnerships with local suppliers. The same year, the first prototypes were built: PowerModule™ for water surfaces and PeatModule™ for peatland.

    2022 — First commissioned project

    02

Sunsurf Solar sold and installed its first pilot — a floating solar park on the irrigation pond at Sötåsens Naturbruksgymnasium in Västra Götaland — confirming that the technology works under Nordic conditions. The same year, Sunsurf Solar was admitted to the Innovatum Startup Incubator, gaining strategic support to push development further.

    2023 — Interest grows

    03

Interest in the technology grew quickly. Sunsurf Solar joined the Founders Loft Incubator in Gothenburg, drawing support from both Founders Loft and Innovatum to accelerate development. We also pitched on SVT's Draknästet (Dragons' Den), bringing the vision of solar on water surfaces to a national audience.

2024 — Expansion and technical milestones

    04

Sunsurf Solar delivered Sweden's first peat-adapted solar installation in Västra Götaland using our PeatModule™ system, and built Halland's first floating solar park at Tångagård in Falkenberg. We also launched Sunsurf Solar Energy AB — our sister company offering PPA contracts for flexible, sustainable power supply. Sunsurf Solar was named Startup of the Year 2024 at the Trollhättan Business Awards.

    2025 — A landmark year

    05

On the company's fifth anniversary, we won Stora Ingenjörspriset in the Innovation category. During the year, Skåne's first floating solar park went live, and Sweden's largest floating solar park was commissioned — a milestone for Swedish solar. Sunsurf Solar was also a finalist in E-Prize 2025, recognising our innovation and engineering depth.

    2026 — What's next

    06

Sunsurf Solar keeps pushing forward. During 2026 we'll install Öland's first floating solar park — the next step on the way to a sustainable energy future. More information soon.

    2025 — Stora Ingenjörspriset, Innovation

    01

The winner of Stora Ingenjörspriset in the Innovation category stands out for pioneering technology with significant potential to reshape our energy production. The company has developed a system that is more than a technical innovation — it has been successfully deployed in live projects with real public benefit. Organised by: the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA), Ny Teknik, Preem AB, Scania Group, Skanska, Sweco and the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket).

E-Prize — Aktuell Hållbarhet, Dagens Industri and E.ON

    2025 — E-Prize finalist, Renewable Energy

    02

The company's solution offers several benefits at once: it produces local electricity, reduces evaporation and frees up valuable land. Bifacial panels paired with natural cooling from the water lift overall energy output as well. Organised by: Aktuell Hållbarhet, Dagens Industri and E.ON.
